Biography

Clay’s practice focuses on litigation, with an emphasis on commercial law, construction law, serious personal injury, and class action litigation. He also has extensive experience in complex insurance coverage litigation, which serves an important asset when representing and advising clients with similar and overlapping, complicated legal matters. With his diverse practice areas, thorough grounding in a breadth of legal issues and proven track record as an effective litigator, Clay brings a wealth of expertise and experience to every case and is deeply committed to serving both local businesses and individuals with unparalleled legal guidance.

After graduating from Clemson and the University of South Carolina Law School in 1997, Clay clerked for the Honorable Thomas Cooper, a S.C. Circuit Court Judge and had an active products liability litigation practice in Columbia before relocating to Charleston. Clay worked with the law firm of Pratt-Thomas & Walker, PA for ten years before starting McCullough Khan Appel with his friend, Jamie Khan. Clay is AV Preeminent® rated by Martindale-Hubbell® , a member of the Southern Trial Lawyers Association, and a recognized Super Lawyer.

A native of Columbia, S.C., Clay has lived in Charleston for over 20 years. Clay and his wife, Catherine, are committed to the health and vitality of our Lowcountry community and are active supporters of numerous local organizations and nonprofits, including Lowcountry Land Trust, Charleston Habitat for Humanity, Charleston Moves and Charleston Reading Partners.
